Father’s Day is just around the corner taking place on Sunday 17th June. As families make up a large group of our holidaymakers, we know just how important a role Dads play in families and so we wanted to mark this occasion in a special way.
To celebrate all of the wonderful fathers around the world, we asked people from across the globe to share with us the different names used to refer to fathers around the world.
It was fascinating to find out the different words for father used around the world, and the similarities between many of them. Some languages such as Italian and Spanish both use the same word for father, “Padre”, while many other languages utilized similar variants and sounds as each other, with variants of words including “Baba”, “Papa”, “Otac” and “Vader” popping up across many different languages.
With this in mind we decided to take an even closer look to see if we could find out the word used for father in as many different countries around the world as possible. We looked at what people call their father in 113 different languages around the world and mapped the results into one interesting graphic which you can see below.
If you’re looking for something original to write in your Father’s Day card this year why not include an international spin.
Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers and father figures around the world.
